Tomorrow is Earth Day!
Every little bit helps so here are just a few tips you can do to help & be a little "greener"!

1.   Reuse!    Plastic Bags–Plastic Grocery bags can be used for a bunch of different uses from carrying food, books, gardening and lots more.  Schools & food banks can always use them. Some grocery stores even give discounts for reusing bags and bringing your own.
2.   Recycle!   Make your own recycling center with bins to sort out cardboard, glass, metal and plastics. Remember to rinse out your metal, glass & plastic!
3.  Donate!    Your old cell phones and eye glasses along with old clothing and shoes can really help someone!  Magazines and books can be donated too so don’t throw them out!  Check out your local church, school or other organizations to see what they are collecting.  Animal shelters are also looking for newspapers too!  You never know what can be reused –just ask.
4.  Create!   Start a craft bin and fill it with egg cartons, paper carton rolls, fabric scraps, newspapers and magazines and more.  You and your kids will have a blast coming up with fun crafts from recycled materials plus it is a very inexpensive way to spark their imagination.

Happy Earth Day!

Earth Day 2009 is coming up this Wednesday, April 22nd.  Earth Day and every day is a time to act to protect our planet.  The 3 principles of being GREEN are:  REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE.  As a professional organizer, I implement these principles with each and every client I work with.  I want to share with you some simple ideas for decluttering your life while being Green at the same time.

REDUCE.  REUSE.  RECYCLE.

REDUCE
  •  Reduce the amount of junk mail by getting off mailing lists.
  • Sign up for Online Bill Pay and Paperless bills and statements
  • Scan photos and mementos to disc
 REUSE
  • Use what you already have.  The one question I always get asked before working with a client is, "What should I buy before you get here?"  My answer is always the same, "NOTHING!"  Most people have already gone out and purchased more than they need.  90% of the time I am able to utilize what a client has and very rarely do I have them go out and purchase additional items.
  • Donate items to a local charity or someone else in need.  As part of our service, we take donations to a local charity, The Mustard Seed, and then send you a receipt.
  • Drop off old magazines to a local bookstore, school, hair salon, nursing home or doctor’s office
  • Utilize an online service to put your items in the right hands.  These services include eBay, Craig’s List and Free Cycle.  Our organizers can help you determine the right avenue to get rid of your item and can even help with the process.

RECYCLE

  •  Find out about the recyclying policy in your area.  Before setting up a recycling center in your home, consider the following:  what materials does my area accept; what do I collect at home that can be recycled; how much room do I have; how much money do I want to spend.
  • Take hangers back to dry cleaners
  • Get the whole family involved by making it easy and convenient

Did You Know:

  • We wear 20% of the clothes we own 80% of the time
  • Each year, 100 million trees are used to produce junk mail
  • Americans toss out over 100 million cell phones every year
  • The National Soap and Detergent Association believes getting rid of clutter would eliminate 40% of the housework in an average home
